1950s Anti-Drugs PSA: Watch out for Soda pops!
With the recent legalisation of marijuana in the states of Colorado and Washington in America, local policing is now having to develop new laws so that the residents of such places can use the drug safely, such as legal limits for the drug whilst driving. At Clips & Footage we are lucky enough to have a wide range of films highlighting the dangers of the drug and ask that officials in the afformentioned states consider not only the more obvious issues but also that they control the DRINKING OF SODA POPS FROM GLASS BOTTLES whilst under the influence as demonstrated in this wonderful 1950s anti-drugs film from our collection.

Dolphins, malls and grass skirts: 1960s Hawaii in full colour
In these dark and misty November days this travelogue on Hawaii shines from the C&F archives with its rich and vibrant 1960s colour stock. Not only does this travelogue highlight the traditional Polynesian culture of the island, with images of grass skirted and flower laden native Hawaiians canoeing down palm lined rivers, but it also shows the growing influence of American culture on the land both in city planning and the burgeoning tourist industry.
Jumping from a quiet river scene the film then shows a busy city center full of mid century architecture. The Ala Moana shopping centre, having only opened in 1959, gleams with newness and prosperity. This is followed by footage of even more recent additions to the state: Sea Life Park with its famous dolphin show and The Ilikai hotel, designed by the architect of the Seattle Space Needle, both of which opened in 1964. By 1967, around the time this film was made, Hawaii reached a milestone in its tourism welcoming 1,000,000 visitors that year. This film is not only a visual treat, but also encapsulates this golden moment in Hawaii's history.

Bunting galore: how Londoners celebrated the 1977 jubilee
With the countdown to the diamond jubilee on, Clips and Footage are excited to represent Michael Gower’s footage of a West London street party for the ’77 jubilee. An anniversary is always a good time to reflect on the past and this colour footage beautifully illustrates a nation at the end of an important decade of British history. It is full of very British scenes: red, white and blue homemade bunting, signs and flags decorate this Fulham street whilst the younger residents appear an array of homemade costumes and take part three-legged race.
What is especially fascinating about this footage is the community spirit it depicts as a group diverse in age and ethnicity come together to celebrate their monarch. As the residents both provide and enjoy the wide range of entertainments such as dancing, a DIY bar and a hefty helping of sandwiches, there is a real sense of neighbourliness which seems unknown to many London streets today.

Happy New Year! Let's all match our scarves and blouses
It's a new year and some readers may be looking to cultivate a more polished, chicer look to reveal in the spring. With that in mind here's a style tip straight from 1946, an exciting time for fashion when WWII austerity measures had ended and luxurious fabrics, colour and patterns were back in a riot of monkey prints and silk scarves which exactly matched the blouses underneath...

Little Gems:1960s Denmark
Ok so it's not very seasonal-appropriate but this is a current favourite in the office, a travelogue of Denmark in the 1960s which departs from the usual tourist sights to show us some unexpected and rather wonderful things:
The first thing to catch our eye was this scene at the races. I love the sheer scale of the hats and the hairdos, there's an element on humour there but also an undercurrent of competition, who can get the biggest hair, it's all a bit Marie Antoinette. The lady at the end wins hands down:
And here's some apartment blocks, the mixture of the modern architecture plus the flashes of colour is set off beautifully by the ivy which swathes the building:
This clip takes us into a Danish retirement home, it looks like a hoot; relaxing in chic surroundings where the days are spent playing pool and telling each other jokes:
And as a finishing touch there are these gentleman chimney sweeps. In their top hats they look rather like upper class Victorian cat burglars:

Take a trip to the moon, in colour!
If you thought Georges Melies 1902 classic trick film ‘A Trip to the Moon’ couldn’t get any better, check out Serge Bromberg’s release of a meticulously restored version of the original hand-painted colour film.
Clips & Footage represent Serge’s vast collection of film treasures (Lobster Films) in the UK and we couldn’t be prouder! 18 years in the making, the original colour print has been brought back to life by Serge and his award-winning restoration team.
This piece of cinematic history premiered at the Cannes opening ceremony in May this year and is coming to the UK on Monday at a special screening at the Institute Francais attended by French electronic duo AIR who have provided the soundtrack.
